When they get a new pair of dentures, many people are surprised to realize they can’t immediately begin using their prosthetics just like they could their real teeth. Although yes, that is the intention of these restorations, the truth is that new dentures take a little getting used to. In fact, most people take about 30 days to adjust to them. Here’s a closer look at this important period, and how you can speed up the process so you can begin enjoying all the incredible benefits of your newly restored smile!
The First 24 Hours
In the first 24 hours with your new dentures, your dentist recommends you wear them around the clock. This helps your mouth get used to wearing them but also helps them take shape in your mouth. Beyond the first day, however, it is important that you remove them before you go to bed each night, as your gums need that time to rest and absorb nutrients.
In the first few days and weeks, be sure to eat a soft diet while you get used to your new prosthetics. Some foods you can try include:
- Mashed potatoes
- Scrambled eggs
- Soup
- Yogurt
- Applesauce
- Jello
- Macaroni and cheese
- Ice cream
- Hummus
The First Two Weeks
After about two weeks, you may need to return to the dentist’s office to check on your mouth and ensure that your dentures are still fitting properly. By now you might be able to expand your diet to incorporate foods that are a bit tougher in texture. You can add more variety to your menu by adjusting your cooking methods, such by roasting or pureeing vegetables instead of preparing them raw or steamed.
To help speak clearly with dentures, narrate your day or read aloud so you get plenty of practice even if you’re alone. While you may have a slight lisp at first, this should go away with time. You may also notice an increase in saliva production, or even mouth sores in the first few days and weeks.
The First 30 Days
Within the first month, your mouth should completely adjust to wearing dentures. You should notice fewer sore spots in the mouth, and less excessive saliva.
Be sure that you are taking excellent care of your new prosthetics by removing them to clean them after each meal. You can use a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild hand soap for this. Be sure to scrub each surface and rinse them well. Don’t forget to floss between each tooth.
When you’re not wearing your dentures, be sure to leave them soaking in either denture soak or water so they don’t dry out. Finally, as mentioned above, be sure to remove them every night before you go to bed, so your mouth stays healthy and your dentures don’t become damaged due to dehydration.
Remember, getting used to your new dentures can take about a month, even if you’ve had them before. To help make the next 30 or so days go as smoothly and comfortably as possible, follow these tips and you’ll be using your restorations like a pro in no time!
