Your dentures should fit securely and always feel comfortable, but sometimes it\u2019s possible to experience painful denture<\/a> sores. Denture sores can be caused by many things, but thankfully there are some safe and effective home remedies you can try to alleviate some of their discomfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s what could be causing them, and what you can do to stop them from coming back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

New Dentures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the many benefits of a fresh, new pair of dentures is their fit. New dentures stay in place comfortably and securely, making it easier to eat, speak, and chew. Unfortunately, however, sometimes it can take a bit of time for your body to adjust to wearing them. This can in turn cause your gums to develop denture sores. Thankfully, these should stop appearing once your body adjusts to wearing them, usually within a few weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fit Changes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For people with older dentures, denture sores can be a common problem. As dentures age, they can change shape, causing them to slide around in your mouth. This can not only make them harder to use, but it can also cause sores to appear. If you notice that yours do not fit as snugly as they used to, schedule an appointment with your dentist. You could need a relining procedure, or it may simply be time for a new pair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Improper Cleaning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When you wear dentures, it is imperative that you clean them regularly. This means you should remove them at least twice per day to brush and floss them. Be sure to clean between each tooth as well as every surface, especially where you apply adhesive, as this can trap bacteria and plaque that could cause denture sores or infection. You should also remove them each night before bed and keep them soaking in a glass of water or denture soak until you\u2019re ready to wear them again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Too Much Wear<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you aren\u2019t removing your dentures before bed each night, you are not only putting them at risk for damage by drying out, but you are also putting yourself at risk for sores.  When you hit the hay, give your mouth a much-needed rest from your dentures, too. This will ensure that they last longer and that your gums remain healthy and pain free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
